June 5, Saturday, is World Environment Day. As the name implies, the day is an opportunity for people around the world to take environmental action.
In a lot of ways, we guess, that makes World Environment Day more or less like Earth Day. There is, though, one major difference: Each World Environment Day has a different theme.
For this year, the theme is “Many Species, One Planet, One Future” – keeping in line with 2010 being the International Year of Biodiversity. “Biodiversity,” of course, is just a fancy way of saying “all the creatures that are the building blocks of Earth,” from the indescribably adorable to the completely terrifying to the totally weird.
Those species are more than fascinating creatures. Humans rely on global biodiversity in countless ways. Life provides us with the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the clean water we drink. We need biodiversity to thrive. It’s as simple as that.
What can you do? One of the biggest threats to species around the world is climate change. As the climate changes, the world changes – and creatures’ habitats are altered forever. Reversing that process will go a long way toward fighting species loss.
Explore what people are saying about World Environment Day. Then read about our “six actions” – small, but scientifically valid, steps that you can take in your everyday life to help fight climate change. One person makes a small difference, but a lot of people make a big one. Let’s get cracking.
