Couple Goes (Almost) Trash-Free for a Year

Written by Chris Coletta | July 19th, 2010 | Add a comment
Cutting back on trash is a good way for people to fight climate change.

Do you feel like living without garbage for a year?

Well, do ya, punk?

Switching from a Dirty (Harry) lifestyle to one without trash is a pretty huge challenge. But that’s the idea behind the Green Garbage Project, a project taken on by an American wife-and-husband team. Their goal was to generate as little trash as possible over the course of 12 months – no small task, given that the average American throws out around 4.5 pounds of trash a day.

Why? As the couple explain on their website, they were always environmentally conscious people – buying eco-friendly products, using green bags, and the like.

“But no matter what we did, it never felt like we were making an appreciable difference,” the authors say. “The trash still piled up, landing in a dump somewhere to stagnate for years to come.”

As it turns out, our heroes were up to the challenge. All of the trash they generated over the course of the year weighed in at three pounds.

Trash and Climate Change

For every bundle of paper that comes from a virgin forest, the world loses trees – and trees are some of our best natural defenses against climate change. That’s because trees store carbon that otherwise would be released into the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas.

In fact, around the world, deforestation accounts for about 16 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

So cutting back on trash isn’t some artificial, meaningless activity. It has an actual impact, not just on the trash that gets thrown in our landfills, but on the climate of the entire world.

Team Earth’s climate challenge is about just that sort of everyday action – and bringing enough people together to make sure those actions have an impact.

You might not be able to cut back to three pounds of trash a year. But you can take a step like cutting back on the amount of forest products you use. And you can join the Team Earth movement.

Go team!

Planting a Tree is a Cliche, But It Really Helps

Written by Chris Coletta | July 12th, 2010 | Add a comment
Planting a tree is one of the best ways to fight climate change.

Sometimes, the simplest, best advice on how to fight climate change is also the advice that’s most easily ignored.

Take planting a tree. If those of us at Team Earth had a nickel for every website that said something like, “Plant a tree, it’s good for the environment” …  well, based on the 27,800,000 hits that “plant a tree” brings up on Google, we’d have about $1.4 million.

But sometimes, you hear things repeatedly because they just make sense.

Ponder this reminder from the amazing climate campaigners at 350.org. The title sums it up nicely: “Why tree planting is crucial.”

As the good 350.org folks point out, trees provide habitats and resources that many of the Earth’s creatures, including humans, rely on. They also store a massive amount of carbon – keeping that greenhouse gas out of the atmosphere, where it helps cause climate change.

Unfortunately, deforestation and logging around the world mean that many healthy trees are burned or chopped down. Today, deforestation accounts for about 16 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

One of the easiest ways to counterbalance that trend? You can plant a tree. One tree won’t change much, but when you consider how many trees even one-quarter of humans could plant, it adds up, no?

So the next time someone goes on about planting a tree, don’t mentally put them in the “Charlie Brown’s teacher” file. Think a little dirty: Get your hands in the muck and plant that tree.

On Father’s Day, Protect an Acre for Dad

Written by Chris Coletta | June 18th, 2010 | Add a comment
Don't panic! Father's Day is soon, but you can protect an acre of forest to give Dad a great last-minute present.

Attention, Team Earth: If you haven’t gotten your Dad a Father’s Day gift yet, do not fear. We have a solution to your procrastination.

It’s called Protect an Acre. It’s a campaign from our parent organization, Conservation International.

The idea is simple. Keeping forests alive and intact prevents tons of carbon from polluting the atmosphere. (That’s why, at Team Earth, we encourage people to take action to protect forests, such as using less paper or planting trees.)

By protecting an acre of forest in Pops’ name, you can give him an awesome, meaningful gift – and make a difference for the environment. You can also send Dad an awesome eCard to let him know what you’ve done – we’ll make sure it gets there Sunday, and not before or after.

Protecting one acre is just $15, which ain’t too shabby when you think about what you’d end up spending on dinner, or a golf shirt, or a necktie. (Personally, I think a fella can never have too many ties, but maybe I’m in the minority there.)

Plus, this gift is way hipper and good for the environment.

Take action today — protect an acre of forest for your dad!
