As a study co-led by a Conservation International scientist recently showed, the news on species around the world isn’t as rosy as we’d like in 2010, the International Year of Biodiversity. Despite promises made by world governments to curb species loss, nature is losing its biodiversity at a rapid pace.
How rapid? Since 1970, we’ve reduced animal populations by 30%, the area of mangroves and sea grasses by 20%, and the coverage of living corals by 40%.
The situation is tough. But when things get tough, the tough can take action.
That’s why CI is one of the partners in the Alliance for Global Conservation, an initiative helping to advise the U.S. government on conservation measures. A collaboration between CI, Pew Charitable Trusts, The Nature Conservancy, the Wildlife Conservation Society and the World Wildlife Fund, the Alliance is bringing decades of scientific knowledge, as well as considerable resources, to the table to help support the Global Conservation Act of 2010 – a bipartisan bill that would put the heft of the United States behind worldwide conservation efforts.
The Alliance recently snagged its own fan page on Facebook. Check it out, and feel free to read more about taking action to protect our planet’s resources – and to combat climate change.
