At Team Earth, we think it’s important to celebrate successes and share good news.
In that spirit, we’ve got something to share today: despite serious challenges, the world is actually moving forward in the fight against deforestation. Last week, the United Nations said that the rate of forest loss in the world has slowed significantly in the last 10 years – a victory for the Earth.
The picture isn’t entirely rosy, though. U.N. data suggest that the rate of deforestation is slowing, and that’s a great thing, but we know that the world is still losing more forests than it’s gaining. Those losses contribute to a changing climate. They shrink the habitats of a growing number of species, from the cotton-top tamarin to the Toco toucan. They reduce freshwater supplies. They hurt local people who rely on the forests to make a living. And they rob the world of some of its most striking beauty.
These aren’t reasons to hang your head. They are, though, reasons to stand up, take action, and make a difference!
CI’s Protect an Acre program helps protect forests – especially tropical forests, which cover just 2% of the world’s surface but are estimated to contain 50% of all life on the planet. Donating is a direct action you can take to make sure those forests stay right where they are. Click here to take action today.
