It turns out that Girl Scouts are united by more than Thin Mints and patches in skills like knot-tying; they also love the environment!
The Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capitol (including DC and parts of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia) has challenged each of its 63,000 members to replace at least one incandescent light bulb with a CFL. The group has calculated that if every local Girl Scout did this, almost $300,000 in energy costs would be saved.
And through our own emission reduction calculations, we’ve found that changing that many light bulbs would also result in enough energy savings to power more than 2,000 homes for a year!
Of course, many girls have already taken actions larger than changing one bulb, some of which are highlighted in this recent article from “The Washington Post”.
At Team Earth, we’re excited to hear about this kind of initiative–not only because it revolves around one of our climate challenges, but also because it’s a great example of just how powerful collective action can be.
So, whether you’re a Girl Scout or just wish you were, go out and change those bulbs!
