Your First Challenge

Written by Julie Blackwell, Team Earth | February 25th, 2010 | Add a comment (3)

Team Earth is expanding! Starting today, our first full-fledged challenge kicks in, and it’s a big one – yes, we’re taking on climate change. As Harrison Ford said in the blog post that started it all, “Saving the planet won’t be easy – and it’s certainly not something you can do alone.”

It’s true – climate change is a big, confusing issue. Energy use. Forest destruction. International treaties. It would be easy to get lost.

That’s why we charged our scientists (both from Conservation International and the Rocky Mountain Institute) with identifying a few realistic, manageable steps we can take to do our part. Things that each of us can do that, when taken together, add up to something huge.

Because really, we all want to contribute, don’t we? Well, Team Earth is dedicated to helping you do exactly that.

While you may not be able to directly impact international climate legislation, you can trade out your old-school light bulbs for CFLs.

Given that most of us can’t drop down to Brazil and chain ourselves to a tree, consider limiting your paper and wood use by 25 percent. We’ll even show you how.

That’s what Team Earth is about – providing every one of us with doable actions to help make the world a better place, then multiplying those steps by building a community that’s doing something great.

Watch this spot for updates on this challenge, tips for getting involved, resources you can use and future challenges coming down the pike. Today marks the beginning of a long-term partnership for the environment. Join us – we’re glad you’re here.

Green is Better than Gold

Written by Molly Bergen | February 23rd, 2010 | Add a comment

As we continue to expand our Team Earth Climate Team, across the continent teams of a different kind are gathered in Vancouver for the Olympic Winter Games.

Millions of people across the globe are cheering on skiers, ice dancers and curlers. O, Canada indeed!

Team Earth loves the Winter Games too, but for a slightly different reason – a special team of experts has been working behind the scenes for years to make this Olympic Games greener than ever before.

What’s that you say? What could possibly be green about an event that constructs new facilities in a new location every two years, and flies in athletes, families and sports fans from all over the world? Fair enough.

But Team Earth isn’t about stopping the things that bring us together – the things so many of us enjoy. It’s about making smart, sustainable choices as part of our daily lives.

And we’re excited because this year, the Olympic Committee is offsetting its direct carbon impact: that’s all the greenhouse gases that are emitted by things like cooling the ice rink, heating the Olympic Village and transporting athletes and spectators between venues. They’ve also taken some other cool steps – ranging from medals made from recycled circuit boards to rainwater collection on the roof of the Richmond Olympic Oval – to bring this huge event closer than ever before to true sustainability.

Visit the Olympic Committee’s sustainability page to check it out for yourself, or watch a brief video from CNNMoney.com.
